S.S. Yongala

On the 23rd of March 1911, a luxurious passenger and freight ship - the S.S. Yongala, sailed into the eye of a cyclone. On board were 122 people, a racehorse called Moonshine, a red Lincolnshire bull, and cargo for northern ports. It was not identified until nearly 50 years later, when it was found alive with the activity of thousands of sea creatures. The loss of the vessel had a tremendous impact on Townsville and Cairns, with most passengers hoping to return to their homes and loved ones.

The Dive Site

The S.S. Yongala lies 28 metres deep, SE of Magnetic Island and is described as an "Oasis in the desert". Around 110 metres long and surrounded by kilometres of sand, marine life flock to this site making this shipwreck one of the most diverse in Australia. From nudibranchs and sea snakes to turtles, bull rays and the Giant Queensland Grouper, this is Australia's premier wreck dive. This is an absolute must for those seeking an unforgettable adventure in diving!
