Reef Blitz at Geoffrey Bay: Citizen Science in Action on Magnetic Island

Every year, around the time of World Oceans Day in June, divers, snorkellers and citizen scientists come together for one shared mission - to explore and document the incredible marine life of the Great Barrier Reef and participate in the annual Reef Blitz.

What is Reef Blitz?

Reef Blitz is an annual citizen science initiative run by the team at Reef Ecologic and supported by local marine tourism operators like us here at Pleasure Divers. It’s a hands-on citizen science experience that empowers everyday people to contribute meaningful data to reef research while building a deeper connection to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

The week long event aims to record as many marine species as possible within a specific location and time period. Participants photograph marine life both above and below the water, then upload their observations to the global biodiversity platform iNaturalist.

These observations become part of a growing scientific database used by researchers, conservation groups and reef managers to better understand reef biodiversity, species distribution and environmental change over time.

The whole Reef Blitz event aligns closely with World Oceans Day celebrations and highlights the important role local communities play in protecting reef ecosystems through education, stewardship and active participation.

Pleasure Divers as hosts

Throughout the week of Reef Blitz participants can choose to attend particular events. Some may choose to travel out to MOUA with other tour operators. Experienced data collectors may opt for an outer reef trip. Others may opt to do their own thing and collect and upload their own images independently, without being part of an event. For those going it alone, it is important that the marine life sighting occurred during the designated dates/ times and on the Great Barrier Reef.

At Pleasure Divers, we believe diving should create connection, not just to the underwater world, but to the community and ecosystems that make these experiences possible.

Hosting Reef Blitz allows us to combine our passion for diving, education and reef conservation into one meaningful event. Geoffrey Bay is our backyard, and sharing its biodiversity with others while contributing to reef science is something we’re incredibly proud to be part of.

Every species photographed, every observation uploaded and every conversation shared helps build awareness and understanding of these fragile marine environments.

So if you’re new to citizen science, the Pleasure Divers Geoffrey Bay event could be best for you. At this event, the team at Reef Ecologic will provide an introduction to citizen science. So, if you’d like to learn how to use iNaturalist or you’d just the like experts to show you how to grab those really great fish ID shots, then come along to the Geoffrey Bay event.

Why Geoffrey Bay?

Geoffrey Bay is one of Magnetic Island’s most iconic fringing reef systems and an ideal location for citizen science events like Reef Blitz. This particular bay is steeped in scientific history, it is the exact location where scientists discovered mass coral spawing in the 1980’s.

Located just metres from shore, the fringing reef offers easy access to thriving coral gardens, diverse reef fish populations and fascinating macro marine life. The protected shallow waters make it suitable for those getting a start in observation and data collection. However, experienced divers enjoy the incredible biodiversity - there is always something new to discover.

For many participants, the fact that boat travel is not needed is a huge bonus. Shore diving and snorkelling means no long journey, no sea sickness, just instant reef access.

The reef system in Geoffrey Bay, lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and provides habitat for countless species including:

  • Hard and soft corals

  • Giant clams

  • Nudibranchs

  • Reef fish

  • Crustaceans

  • Rays

  • Sea turtles

  • Echinoderms and invertebrates

Many Reef Blitz participants are surprised by just how much life exists on these accessible inshore reefs.

What makes the Geoffrey Bay event special is that absolutely anyone can get involved. You don’t need to be a marine biologist or an experienced diver - just curious, enthusiastic and passionate about the ocean.

What Participants Learn

Hosted by Pleasure Divers in collaboration with Reef Ecologic, Reef Blitz is more than just a dive event. Reef Blitz is designed to be both educational and engaging. Throughout the event, participants learn practical skills that help them become more confident ocean advocates and citizen scientists.

Some of the key learning experiences include:

Marine Species Identification

Participants learn how to identify reef species using visual characteristics, behaviour and habitat clues. This often includes fish identification, coral recognition and spotting unique macro life hiding within the reef.

Citizen Science Techniques

Attendees gain hands-on experience using iNaturalist to record biodiversity observations, upload photographs and contribute valuable scientific data to ongoing reef monitoring projects.

Reef Ecology and Conservation

Through guided discussions and in-water experiences, participants develop a greater understanding of reef ecosystems, coral resilience, biodiversity and the challenges facing the Great Barrier Reef.

Sustainable Diving and Snorkelling Practices

A major focus of Reef Blitz is encouraging low-impact interactions with the marine environment. The expert team at Pleasure Divers will ensure participants learn best-practice techniques for reef-safe diving, buoyancy control and respectful wildlife encounters.

Previous Reef Blitz Outcomes

Each year, Reef Blitz continues to grow in both participation and impact.

Previous Reef Blitz events across the Great Barrier Reef region have recorded thousands of biodiversity observations and hundreds of species. In 2024, 300 participants uploaded more than 2,500 observations throughout the week. The marine science community is grateful and appreciative of contributions from everyday people. The collected data contributes to long-term reef monitoring efforts and helps build a better understanding of how reef ecosystems are changing over time.

Beyond the scientific outcomes, Reef Blitz also creates something equally valuable - connection. Participants often leave with:

  • A stronger appreciation for local reef systems

  • New knowledge about marine life

  • Improved confidence in the water

  • New friendships within the ocean community

  • A deeper sense of environmental stewardship

For many people, it’s their first experience contributing directly to real-world conservation and research. Whether participants join as certified divers or casual snorkellers, everyone has the opportunity to make a genuine contribution.

Join the Next Reef Blitz

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the reef in a deeper, more meaningful way, Reef Blitz is the perfect opportunity.

Come explore the incredible marine life of Geoffrey Bay, learn from passionate reef educators and become part of a growing community of citizen scientists helping protect the Great Barrier Reef for future generations.

Because protecting the reef starts with connecting to it.
